The Progression of the Toy Story Movies by Paul Buchanan
When the first Toy Story film came out, it changed the way that cinema and animation worked together. As the first feature-length computer animated film to ever be seen by the public, it captured the world’s imagination and spawned a huge industry of similarly-created films. Out of nowhere came movies like Shrek, Antz, A Bug’s Life and plenty of others, until the computer animated film industry became one of the most profitable yet.
One of the best things about the original Toy Story movie is its ability to age with grace and no lapse in quality. Released in 1995, Toy Story amazed adults and kids alike – including kids who are now adults today. This is part of the reason that Toy Story 3, released in 2010, was always going to be a smash hit. Twenty-something adults who looked back with love and nostalgia at the first ever Toy Story movie found themselves trembling with anticipation at the prospect of another outing for Woody, Buzz et al and, given the sheer quality of the first two instalments, Toy Story 3 seemed the perfect film to bring new audiences too as well.
It didn’t disappoint. Reviews flew out of papers, magazines, websites and blogs – all in Toy Story 3′s favour. It seemed as though the film had more than met the expectations set upon it by its predecessors – and had even surpassed them. Countless grown adults confessed to being reduced to blubbering wrecks at the film’s heart-wrenching storyline, which deals with the very real themes of love, loss, friendship and death. Toy Story 3 wasn’t just about some kids’ playthings who came to life when nobody was looking any more, it was about real life issues, some of which are the most profound emotional experiences we come across in our lives. In short, Toy Story 3 dug right into the hearts of those watching it and gave them a good, strong pummelling.
That isn’t to say that the movie wasn’t also hilarious, smart, witty and – as with its previous instalments – a true feast for the eyes in terms of animation. But it also served as a testament to how far Pixar has come since that first romp through the world of Woody and Buzz – which is a long, long way from the original film’s light-hearted, yet nevertheless fantastic, drama.
The release date of the DVD for Toy Story 3 is out soon. In the meantime fans can play the Toy Story 3 game to get their fix.
