If “Ivory Tower” is any indication of things to come by Tianya
Also making himself a force to reckon with is Michael Stuhlbarg’s Arnold Rothstein. The gangster wants to know who killed Big Jim Colosimo, and he invites the suspected triggerman over to intimidate him into a confession. The show’s writing is at its finest here, with Rothstein starting the meeting with a story about how he bet a guy $10,000 to swallow a cue ball, and ending it with: “If I cause a stranger to choke to death for my own amusement, what do you think I’ll do to you if you don’t tell me who ordered you to kill Colisimo?”
As dark as the episode gets, writer Terence Winter finds ways to lighten the tone by exploring more human sides of the characters. We spend a lot of time with Jimmy and his family in this episode, as he chases $3000 bucks that he doesn’t have to make peace with Nucky. We meet Jimmy’s mother (Gretchen Mol) in an awkward scene that sets up Mol as Jimmy’s girl on the side, when in reality she’s his mother. The payoff to all of this is ineffective and jarring, leaving us question why this choice was made at all.
What we don’t question is how Winter further develops Nucky’s softer, more nostalgic side. Nucky stares at the picture of his dead wife and takes out the pain of whatever memories it brings on the help shining his shoes. Nucky also fills the void his wife left with Margaret (Kelly MacDonald), the lower-class woman Nucky recently widowed. His respect for her, despite the truth about her husband’s death that he keeps from her, is great stuff here that no doubt will get more service as the season continues.
Also great is how Nucky pisses away Jimmy’s $3000 at the casino, making Jimmy watch the entire time to prove a point: Jimmy and Nucky may have been family before, but now its business. And if Jimmy wants to play gangster in Nucky’s town, he’ll have to pay for the priviledge.
A lot worked in this episode, but a few beats missed the mark. Van Alden’s trip down creepy Buffalo Bill territory starts here, with the fed coveting Margaret’s hair ribbon while writing a loveless letter to his wife. This trait feels forced and unnecessary, and the Purtian of purpose lawmen with a dark side is too familar and lazy a crux to give a character in a show of this caliber.
Al Capone’s violent encounter with a curious reporter feels it was made by a film student who watched Knockaround Guys one too many times, with the scene ending with Al saying he’s “making a statement” as he delivers a kick to the reporter’s face.
Family and the role children play in putting perspective on the sins of their fathers, are themes this hour of Boardwalk empire dvd centers upon. The shock violence of the pilot takes a backseat to the familial relationships that somewhat bookend the episode, allowing the series to emerge as less a show solely about “Gangsters” and more one about flawed, heartfelt people finding their way on either side of the law.
“Broadway Limited” opens with one of the survivors of the Bootleg massacre being wheeled into the hospital. He’s one of Rothstein’s men, and Nucky wants him put down before he can confess that Jimmy, Nucky’s former number two, is the man that shot him.
This leads to a comical and unsettling scene where Eli, Nucky’s brother and Chief of Police, tries to suffocate the gut-shot man with his own pillow, while the victim’s bunk mate listens. Van Alden arrives before Eli can do the job, and righteously puts the victim in federal custody.
Shannon’s Van Alden is one of the few characters who uses violence as a last resort, as he interrogates the suspect by putting his hand wrist-deep into the man’s shotgun wound. As powerful and threatening as men like Nucky are, Van Alden emerges as a truly unique and dangerous threat; a pious federal agent who can use both the Bible and the law to justify his actions. Shannon excels in this scene, and in its follow-up: A quiet dinner at home with the wife that says very little but speaks so much about how complex and unpredictable Van Alden is.
Homelife and family are also effected by Gutshot Finkel’s arrival, especially those of Margaret and Jimmy. Early in the episode, we see the toll Jimmy’s actions are taking to life adjusting to his new responsibilities as father. Jimmy’s relationship with his pending wife goes south when he finds suggestive pictures she took for a photographer, pictures she intended to send to Jimmy while he was at war. But it’s not really these pictures that bother him, but rather the portraits of his son looking more at home in the studio and with his mother than he ever will with a man like Jimmy.
Margaret is having breakfast with her two children when they ask her when their brother or sister is coming, the sibling Margaret lost after the last beating she received from her husband. To fill that void, and to ease his conscience, Nucky gives Margaret a job at an elite fashion store. Here, Margaret caters to the needs of Lucy, Nucky’s girlfriend. Not long after Lucy was just telling Nucky that she’d have his child, and that she would make a good mother, we see Lucy relishing in her class and status, forcing Nucky’s pet project to do her job and dress Lucy.
